Translated and Edited by Anthony C. Wu
This is an abridged story (think a fourth of the original size) of a popular Chinese legend, called Journey to the West.
Every Chinese person knows this tale and it has been made into many
shows and movies. It tells the tale of how one monkey becomes immortal
and fights with the gods. Then, as recompense, he must accompany a monk
who is seeking holiness from Buddha himself. The monk eventually gains
five companions who protect and aid him on his journey and who get
rewarded themselves. It is a very entertaining story but they talk a lot
and to great length (the way Shakespeare's characters do). There is a
horribly degrading view of women and morality in the book, but other
than that, it is a very entertaining read and gives good insight into
the historical worldview of the Chinese.
