The Monkey and The Monk

Translated and Edited by Anthony C. Wu

This is an abridged story (think a fourth of the original size) of a popular Chinese legend, called Journey to the West. Every Chinese person knows this tale and it has been made into many shows and movies. It tells the tale of how one monkey becomes immortal and fights with the gods. Then, as recompense, he must accompany a monk who is seeking holiness from Buddha himself. The monk eventually gains five companions who protect and aid him on his journey and who get rewarded themselves. It is a very entertaining story but they talk a lot and to great length (the way Shakespeare's characters do). There is a horribly degrading view of women and morality in the book, but other than that, it is a very entertaining read and gives good insight into the historical worldview of the Chinese.

Fablehaven

By Brandon Mull

This book follows two children and their adventure with their grandparents at Fablehaven. Kendra Sorenson is a thirteen year old girl, who would much rather be on the cruise with her parents than in the country at a house that she has never been too, and with grandparents she barely knows.
Seth Sorenson is and 11-year-old mischievous  boy who doesn't like to listen to orders.

When Kendra and Seth arrive at Fablehaven, their grandfather sets some ground rules. Like No Going in to the forest that surrounds the back of the house, and no going into the barn. Then he takes them to their room in the attic, that is very spacious and had a hen in it. Their Grandfather handed Kendra a ring of three keys saying that they go to something in this room and that they could figure it out.

After that strange things started happening, such as bugs hovering over a mirror, and an old hag asking Seth to have some tea, and other little things that make Kendra and Seth think that there is more to this place than meet the eye.

I had just read another book by Brandon Mull and was eager to start this one. It was very intriguing. The whole idea of it is very exciting and entertaining. You really should read these books, there are five total of this series, and I am waiting on getting the second and third. But the first book was absolutely amazing.

Peter and the Secret of Rundoon

By Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.

First of all This is like the fourth time I have read this book. So I really like this book.

It is the third installment of The Starcatchers series, and in this one Peter and Molly again are sent into a mysterious adventure involving starstuff. Ombra is back for this thrilling third book.
Peter and the lost boys along with Hook are kidnapped by none-other than Lord Ombra! They are taken to Rundoon and put in the jails cell, Peter is seriously wounded by a poison arrow of deadly visitors to Mollusk Island, So he can't fly.

Meanwhile in England, Leonard Aster is very concerned about the recent happenings. With Leonard worrying about Peter and other various things, of course Molly is worried too. Taking matter into her own hands Molly sets off to find information that might lead to Peter's genealogy.

This book is really exciting and entrancing. For me though it is not the best Starcatchers book, but I have a friend who it is her favorite. So it really depends on the person.

Treasure Island

By Robert Louis Stevenson

Jim Hawkins is a young boy who lives with his parents in the time of Pirates, and treasure maps and Pirate Treasure. Cap'n Flint's treasure is said to be the greatest, but no one know where to find it, or where the treasure map is.

Jim's parents run an inn near the sea, and one night an old sea captain comes to the inn. He doesn't leave for months, in fact he never leaves. The old captain dies at the inn. Young Jim looks through a chest and finds a treasure map, Cap'n Flint's treasure map.

Jim then sets off with many friends and enemies and the in-between. Jim travels the wide ocean with pirates, searching for Treasure Island! Along the way he meets the hero-and-villain-in-one, Long John Silver.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a difficult read, but a fantastic story. The characters seem to jump out of the page and act the story out in front of your eyes. It truly is a fantastic book.

A Christmas Carol

Written by Charles Dickens

Old Scrooge, a mean old man who hates Christmas, will be visited by four spirits. First it will be the ghost of a died friend, Marley's Ghost. Then he will be visited by The Ghost of Christmas Past, and Scrooge will see some of his past Christmases. Then it will be The Ghost of Christmas Present, and Scrooge will see his own assistant trying to make the best of a hard time. Then The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will haunt him. With this ghost, Scrooge will see only death.

This book is a lovable classic. It has been told since Dickens wrote it. Every Christmas Dickens would read it to a crowd.

I find that this was one of Dickens harder reads, but that may just be me. I am currently reading Oliver Twist and find it a little easier to read then A Christmas Carol. But nonetheless this is an amazing book.

Redeeming Love

Redeeming Love, a novel
By Francine Rivers

This renowned Christian novelist weaves another fantastic tale of forgiveness and rejuvenating life found only in Christ. It is based on the story of Hosea, a prophet in the Bible who is told by God to marry a prostitute. Ms. Rivers takes this story and places it in California, in 1850, during the Gold Rush. Not only is there a booming business for merchants, who supply the gold miners, but there is also a booming business for prostitutes. Ever since Angel was 8 years old, she has been exploited by men. When Michael Hosea comes along and is told by God to marry her, she despises him and only goes with him because she has no choice. He perseveres in his love and gradually, she comes to know God's love through Michael's love. But is love enough to heal her lifetime of scars? Will she ever be able to be who God made her to be? Will she ever be accepted by the people around her?
Note of warning: there is not explicit language but there is a lot of talk about nakedness. Advised for only mature readers.

Graceling

By Kristin Cashore

In the make-believe world of Dells, there are such things as graces. Graces are special abilities that the Gracelings possess. Gracelings are the people who have a grace. Some grace could be for swimming, or running, singing, cooking, sewing. But Katsa's grace is to kill.

When Katsa was eight, her distant cousin approached her, feeling threatened, Katsa hit his nose, not wanting to kill him, but killing him. After that her uncle Randa, king of the Middluns, makes Katsa his slave, sending her out to torture people who haven't harmed anyone.

Katsa came up with this council, where she and a few others, her cousin Raffin son of Randa and a captain in Randa's court Oll included, will go and do important things to help restore the peace in Dells. Katsa does not like what her uncle makes her do.

On one of Katsa's mission for the council, Katsa must rescue a Lienid prince, father of the current king of Lienid. This Lienid Prince was kidnapped for a reason no one knows.

This book was amazing, I loved it. The Plot was fantastic, I don't know about you but I love when I figure out a secret and it ends up being true. This book was like that with me, it was predictable, but in a good way.

The only bad thing was Katsa's morals, she does not believe in marriage. There are a couple parts that could be skipped, and you will know them when you get to them.

Other than that this book is amazing.

Review by: Christie S.

This is one of my favorite books. It is a companion book, or "prequel" to her first published book, Graceling. I just re read it and stayed up really late last night to finish it.

This is a beautifully written book. Kristin Cashore is so talented. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. She writes with strength and grace. Gentle in writing style she introduces thought provoking questions about life, love, and human nature. Cashore will send you on the ride of your life with plenty of plot twists and turns. I believe that Kristin is an up and coming author to watch.

This book is set in the magical land of Dells. The main character is seventeen year old Fire. She is the last human shaped "monster." She is unimaginably beautiful and can control the thoughts and actions of all that surround her. Fire has a dangerous power to manipulate humans in unbelievable ways. However, Fire is not like most monsters in Dells. She attempts to reject this power that she views as evil. Secrets from her past threaten to tear her and her whole existence apart. What will this young woman discover on her journey to womanhood?

Be ready for an adventure that is wonderful to sink your teeth into. I hope you enjoy this!

Jane Eyre

By Charlotte Bronte

I recently read Jane Eyre, and was captivated but how each character seem to come to life in my head.

At the beginning of the book, Jane Eyre is just ten years old and an orphan living with her aunt and cousins who absolutely despise her. She is then sent of to boarding school. She stays there for six years as a student and two years as a teacher. After that she decides to go and make a better life for herself.

She becomes the governess of a young french girl in the ward of a mysterious man named Edward Rochester.

Jane is then plunged head long into a tale of romance, lies, love, family, and friendship.

I enjoyed this book immensely, it was written fantastically. It is definetly a classic worth reading.

Great Expectations

“Great Expectations” Book Review
By: Christie S.

Charles Dickens wrote “Great Expectations” as his last book. Many believe it to be the best of all his books. Charles Dickens weaves a very compelling and intriguing story line. He uses surprising conflict, colorful characters, and a fast paced plot. He also inserts surprising twists and turns. Mr. Dickens really takes us on a journey. People say that a good story is like a roller coaster. It starts out big and then in between all the tricks it gives us breathing time and at the end there is a big finale. “Great Expectations” is just such a roller coaster.
It starts out as sort of a narrative. Pip is older and more mature and is looking back upon his youth. One of the major themes of this book is growing up. This is a book about coming of age. “Great Expectations” has so many complex themes. Dickens really sets about to examine all the intricacies of the human heart and mind. He examines in depth the complications of having human relationships.
The characters really make this book a timeless classic. Dickens portrays his characters as flawed which makes them all the more real. He really hits on issues that are prevalent even in the twenty-first century. We have our protagonist an ambitious Pip. There is the beautiful, but scornful Estella who has experienced a horrible childhood. There is the bitter Miss Havisham who is looking for love but doesn’t know what it looks like in the first place. We see a mysterious convict, Magwitch, who is somehow a vital part of the plot. We have an oppressive dictator in Pip’s older sister Mrs. Joe. There is a kind hearted brother-in-law in Joe and a sweetheart in his tutor Biddy. Herbert, Pip’s friend from London, is a simple fellow with character that surpasses everyone. All of these characters and many more make this book rich and worthwhile. You can learn so much from them.
The book starts out in a very gloomy and dark graveyard. This first scene sets a mood of foreboding. Great Expectations then proceeds to tell the story of Pip’s life. It chronicles from the time he meets the convict, Magwitch to when he goes to meet Miss Havisham and Estella. And from that time on Pip is discontent to be an apprentice to his good friend Joe. Pip begins to dream and to want to be in a higher station. He even dreams of one day marrying the conceited; cold Estella. In a sense this is where he starts forming his “great expectations.” Pip begins to change. He starts being unhappy with his circumstances even though he has much to be grateful for. Pip begins to treat people with disrespect and he begins to devalue the good people around him, even his loyal friend Joe. So when the news comes that he has a secret benefactor that wishes to support him and make him into a gentleman he moves to London leaving his childhood home behind him. In a sense he also leaves behind his innocence. The last half of the book is filled with action and shocking secrets. We find out who Pip’s benefactor is, what happens to Miss Havisham, who Estella’s parents are, and many more secrets. It takes you on a wild roller coaster ride that leaves you breathless but semi dissatisfied at the end. Usually Dickens wraps up his characters very nicely but in Great Expectations he leaves certain things unresolved.
Overall this is a fabulous book that will remain a timeless classic for many years to come. We get to grow with Pip. Great Expectations is a very worthwhile read. It gives you insight on youth and the effect that choices have on you. It really makes you think especially about the consequences of being foolish. There are many universal themes that you will be able to pick out and learn from. This truly is a classic in its own right. Bravo, Charles Dickens!
